Oh So Gestalt, Yet: The Grid Rules First

She catches herself in what looks like a contradiction: ‘how much I claim to be oh so gestalt, and here I am like: we must discuss the grid geometry rules first.’ An incongruity she doesn’t understand but is starting to enjoy. It isn’t one. Going to the atomic unit first is the most gestalt move available, not a betrayal of it — because the atom is where the whole framework is already encoded. ‘A single triple is the smallest amount of information’; a raster cell is the smallest piece of space; an idea is the smallest piece of knowledge. The entire ideology of a system is compressed into its smallest unit, so the holist and the reductionist are doing the same gesture from opposite ends — reach for the grid rule and you are reaching for the whole. No plot hole. The instinct that runs to the smallest precise rule is the same instinct that insists meaning lives only in relations; both refuse the middle, where things pretend to stand alone.
