A foundational stance she stated off the cuff and then confirmed she’d long held: ‘structure is essential to meaning.’ Any time she’s interested in something — geology, music, books — she uses each as a reference point for the others; meaning lives in the relations, not the things. Her naffer version: ‘the entire universe can be found in a discussion between two beings’ — because ‘all activity on earth depends on it affecting something else. That’s basically the only thing we know to be universally true. There is no need for oral or written communication in a one-entity universe.’ Relation isn’t a feature of the world; it’s the precondition for there being one.
