The animating grievance, decidedly human: there is no layman-accessible equivalent of Wikipedia for spatial information. Wikidata and Wikipedia have no good way to navigate their info visually or geographically — maybe anyone could, but last she checked (admittedly ages ago) no one had. OpenStreetMap holds world-class open spatial data but ‘is not accessible to the layman the way wikipedia is.’ Wikipedia’s own maps suck. Meanwhile the industry makes assloads of money on ‘spatial analytics’ and ‘location data’ — monetizing the exact gap where a public spatial commons should be.
