Geography Fails at Both

The capstone diagnosis, reached 2026-06-15 (‘a type of heavy I was not prepared for’ — like pulling
Excalibur). Geography is broken because it fails at both levels at once.
Its fundamental atoms — point, line, polygon — are too crude to hold the physical reality of Earth,
which is continuous, fuzzy, overlapping, contested. And its topology is too rigid to hold the
semantic reality of the ideas it carries, which are infinitely more varied and belong in latent /
relational space, not physical coordinate space. So geography is stuck in the worst of both: too
physical to be honest about meaning, too coordinate-bound to be honest about the planet. It fails at
both. The seam where the two failures meet is the datum — the fixed origin (Greenwich) that
pretends a chosen zero is no choice at all. Strip the datum and geography is latent space:
near-things-more-related (Tobler’s First Law) holds in 768 dimensions or on Earth — Earth just nailed
itself to a zero.
Her own framing: geography’s ‘[failure? hesitation?] to adopt [latent space] has resulted in a
misrepresentation of space that is now at odds with other representations of ideas. things must be
able to exist in the same space, on the same plane, and not be computationally wrong.’ Space became
the outlier — the one domain still trapped in fixed-coordinate atoms while every other kind of
idea moved to relational representation. (Held honestly: it may not be fully true even in latent space
— ‘presumably more true than in GIS.’ A thesis that admits its own edge.)
The unbastardization is one move resolving both failures: drop the datum, keep the gesture. Let
space be relational (fixes the semantic failure), and let spatial intuition — zoom, pan, within —
become the interface to that relational space (fixes the legibility failure). The map becomes a UI,
not a territory; zoom becomes abstraction-traversal, not scale (New York → is-a world-city → the set
of world cities). Geography stops being a data model — an over-constrained one — and becomes the most
intuitable navigation grammar humans own, pointed at all of knowledge.
