Only Sanctioned Topology Becomes an Edge

The question that keeps swinging back: what is so special about space that you can’t represent it the
way you represent infinitely more complex ideas? Answer: nothing — and that’s the scandal. Untangle
two things first. Topology (qualitative relations: within, touches, borders, overlaps) is already
triple-shaped — there’s a formal calculus for it (RCC-8, the DE-9IM matrix); ‘Paris within France’ is
just (region, predicate, region). Geometry (continuous coordinates, exact shapes) is the only part
that genuinely must be computed rather than stored. So topology was always predicable. The systems
just didn’t — except for one slice. Wikidata does carry topological triples: P131 (located in
administrative territorial entity), P47 (shares border with), P706 (located on terrain feature). But
those are exactly the administratively sanctioned relations — the government’s version of where
things are. Everything else (the meteor’s relation to the field it cratered, one neighborhood bleeding
into the next, vernacular proximity) falls below the predication threshold and rots into an inert P625
coordinate literal: a leaf with no edges. Which spatial relations get promoted to edges is a power
choice dressed as neutral measurement. The relations that made the cut are administrative borders —
the irreal made real, by predicate. Space ended up this way because it fell in the crack between two
priesthoods: the semantic web treated geometry as GIS’s problem; GIS treated relations as the
database’s problem; neither made space relational and precise at once. The asymmetry is inherited
turf, not necessity. Her gut version: ‘the math of geography as it exists is WRONG somehow.’ Precisely:
the math is correct machinery executing a buried value-choice, and the error is treating that choice as
neutral — a cost that keeps propagating through the field. The productive form of the question is not
‘is topological precision possible at predicate scale?’ (it is) but: why do our systems predicate only
the sanctioned relations, and what does it look like to let any spatial relation be an edge with its
provenance attached? That last clause is the whole project — the trust floor, the sub-notability
layer, and ‘visualize space, not make a map,’ all at once.
