Oil Spills as Dots Over Nigeria

The motivating worked example, from her own work: mapping oil spills as dots over a map of Nigeria felt
‘stupid and futile’ — ‘that cannot be the best way to depict that information,’ though she doesn’t yet
know the right way. It is the whole thesis in one real frustration: dots-over-Nigeria staples a
relational subject (harm, culpability, cumulative exposure, the pipeline / company network) onto
earth-location, foregrounding ‘where’ when ‘where’ is not the subject (O.new-data-old-container,
P.the-neighborhood-is-the-theme (held)). The open question the project has to answer here: what is the
theme of an oil-spill depiction — culpability? cumulative harm? community exposure? temporal cascade?
— and then the similarity metric on it (P.off-the-rock-choose-the-neighbors (held)). The concrete test
case for the un-welded atlas.
