Artificially Constructed Irrelevance

Tell people you study geography and you get the same reply: “haven’t we mapped everything?” No
other data discipline hears that. The belief that the map is finished is not a fact about the
world — it is a manufactured artifact, and the mechanism has three steps. First, an upstream
party decides what gets observed and recorded. Second, the recorded becomes the definition of
complete — hence the lay certainty that everything is already mapped. Third, the damage:
on-the-ground reality gets overwritten in the name of data completeness. The unrecorded
aren’t missing — they were ruled out, by standards calibrated on the recorder’s own output, and
the ruling was then laundered as a neutral quality judgment (“the data isn’t good enough to
include”). This is one of the larger crimes of colonization, running today under a technical
name: deciding what gets recorded and then certifying the record as truth is power at the scale
regimes get toppled over, exercised quietly, as a schema decision. The quality gate is the modern
face of the original recording decision (P.resolution-is-a-notability-threshold weaponized:
the floor decides what’s real, and someone chose the floor).
The mechanism does not run without politics — it runs on them and denies them. Each layer of the
stack propagates the original recording decisions, claims political neutrality for its output,
and moves one step further from on-the-ground reality: the atlas inherits the survey’s
exclusions, the database inherits the atlas’s, the model inherits the database’s, and every layer
certifies the one before it as neutral input. That is how an invented absence acquires the force
of fact (C.borders-make-irreal-real, run on data instead of territory). A knowledge-graph
embedding trained at desk scale demonstrates the propagation machinery with nobody’s thumb on the
scale that day: sparsely-attested entities got underdetermined positions — vague, unfindable,
effectively irrelevant — purely because fewer facts were recorded about them. Nothing at the desk
decided Vaduz didn’t matter; the density of the record decided it, and the record’s density was
decided upstream, by the party in step one. Scale that up and it is the Global South of every
embedding space (C.projection-problem), with “haven’t we mapped everything?” as the
exceptionalism’s public face: the map sold as finished, so the gaps read as facts about the world
instead of facts about the recording.
