More Harley Than 1x1

Working the geography problem out loud, she locates her own role and expects to keep debating it: she
is not the right person to build the tool, she is the right person to shout the critique from the
rooftops ‘with the bellowing of a foghorn.’ She knows GIS extremely well, but the WebGIS / Wikidata /
WDQS / triple-store layer is not her depth — she had a half-second pause on what WDQS even stood for. She
could learn enough to slap together a proof of concept, and maybe should; but the honest self-read is:
‘my wisdom is in seeing the whole picture,’ the problem understood from every angle. ‘I’m more Harley
than 1x1, even though I need 1x1 to get there.’ ‘I only know enough about map units to know a) they’re
important and b) I am not the person to be deriving geodetic formulas. But I am definitely the person
to talk about priesthood cracks.’ This is not scope-avoidance; it is accurate self-location — and the
Harley who also knows the 1x1 matters is harder to dismiss than a pure theorist, because she knows
where the bodies are buried even if she doesn’t dig them up herself. The division of labor is the
aiaioli one pointed at a new problem: she is subject + editor, the connective tissue does the
obnoxiously specific part. She owns the tool; she doesn’t have to type it.
