Code-Switching Became Aesthetic

Observation · identity · personal_truth · visibility: publishable

She grew up navigating multiple contexts (immigrant family, American culture, diaspora, code-switching between registers). The ability to see from multiple POVs simultaneously — always observing the culture while participating in it — started as a survival skill. Over time it became an aesthetic preference: she can’t ‘just do the thing’ because she’s simultaneously doing the thing AND watching herself do it AND watching the structure of the doing. This is why she’s drawn to formal experimentation (meta-awareness embedded in the form), why pronoun-switching happens (creating distance while remaining present), and why comedy must always deconstruct itself (the deconstruction IS the voice, not a bug). The recursive self-reference loop, the narrator-instigator-imaginary persona, the interest in narrators who can’t control their own narrative — all have roots here. ‘You’re obsessed with THE NARRATOR LOSING (or fighting for) CONTROL OF THE NARRATIVE.’ This is the aesthetic expression of having always been both inside and outside cultural context.
