Half the Lines Are Made Up, the Other Half Will Kill You

‘Dots on a map are meaningless, and so are colored shapes on a map, and half the lines are made up,
but the other half will kill you.’ Borders are simultaneously fictions and lethal realities: many are
pure invention — drawn by treaty, arbitrary, C.borders-make-irreal-real — yet crossing the wrong
one is fatal. Often the same line is both: the invented line acquires lethal force. The static
geographic map cannot hold this doubleness; it renders every line with identical authority, flattening
the difference between the fictional and the fatal — which is precisely how the made-up half launders
itself into looking as real as the half that kills.
Context: arose 2026-06-17 while evaluating Wikidata-on-a-map tools and landing on the conclusion that
the static ‘geographic’ map is insufficient — dots, shapes, and lines all rendered stripped of the
meaning that makes them matter (or murder).
