Loanword Geography

Words encode the geographic history of their transmission in their form — specifically in pronunciation. A word borrowed via land route will sound different from the same concept borrowed via sea route. The phoneme is a geographic fossil. Etymology is a form of cartography. This is not metaphor: the causal chain is real (route → dialect contact → phoneme adoption). ‘You can read the trade route in the phoneme.’ Original synthesis of historical linguistics and geographic thinking.
