Chai Routes

The pronunciation of ‘tea’ in different languages is a fossil of the trade route it traveled. Russian чай (chai) came overland via the Silk Road from Mandarin 茶 (chá). English ‘tea’ came by sea through Dutch traders from Min Nan ‘te.’ The word didn’t change meaning — it changed pronunciation because the route determined which Chinese dialect it passed through. You can read the trade route in the phoneme. This was the first example in a starter TTL file built to understand triple stores, and it became the seed of C.loanword-geography and the whole geographic-linguistics cluster.
