Lawful Evil

Applied analytically, not as D&D flavor. An institution that operates fully within its own rules — genuinely rigorous, genuinely preserves things, genuinely produces knowledge — while using that legitimacy for power perpetuation. Properties: efficient (builds systems that work), self-legitimating (the better the archive, the more essential it becomes), attracts genuine virtue (scholarship, stewardship, rigor) and co-opts it in service of power, absorbs opposition rather than confronting it, antifragile. Distinguished from corrupt evil (breaks its own rules) and chaotic evil (no rules). The Vatican is the case study. The structure recurs: universities/knowledge → credentialing; corporations/innovation → extraction; nation-states/democracy → power projection. All major institutions run a gap between stated mission and actual function. Lawful evil is the institution that has made this gap permanent, self-sustaining, and invisible. ‘You start with preservation, you end with power. And every step feels reasonable.‘
