Decorum as Policing
Concept · politics · hypothesis · visibility: publishable
The container idea applied to speech: a bit called ‘the 7 words you can’t say on TV’ that isn’t really about the words. ‘The current rules of propriety, especially in formal spaces, are policing in nature’ — ‘decorum’ is a mechanism for controlling who gets to speak how, dressed as manners. Sibling to the FCC-fines-on-C-SPAN bit and the whole ungovernable theme: the rules of propriety are the point of attack, not the punchline.
