Diagnostic technique for argument development. Before writing anything, force completion of: ‘I think [X] because [Y] because [Z].’ Ugly sentence, not intended as prose. If you can’t complete it, you don’t have an argument yet — you have an intuition. That’s diagnostic, not failure: it tells you what development still needs to happen before you put it on the page. Once you have the chain, sections basically write themselves: X is your opening claim, Y and Z are what you have to establish, and the connective tissue is the explicit ‘which means that’ between them. Forces you to surface whether you have logic or feeling before you start writing. Works for personal essay, cultural argument, comedy takes — the form of the chain shifts by register but the diagnostic function is constant.
