Emoji Rides Unicode But Isn’t a Language

Emoji being unicode is actually a big evolution in communication — in her read, the first standardized tone indicators in text. There is now a way to denote exactly which level of smiley you are, and it works across every platform. A universal encoding (unicode) produced a universal tone layer, carried everywhere the standard reaches. But even though most/all devices can do unicode, emoji is usually not considered a language — and it isn’t a formal one at this time. The infrastructure crossed the boundary; the taxonomy didn’t follow.
