A Hof-ism she borrows and points: the written word as the default prestige form of storytelling is a bias, not a fact. Her quarrel isn’t with books — ‘you will never find me criticizing people reading’ — it’s with the canon and cultural-authority part: that every playwright is measured against Shakespeare, that literature programs and book awards ‘ferociously defend books as the truest form of storytelling.’ Same paradigm, she argues, as complaining kids are on their phones and don’t know command line: the stories keep getting more complex, the prestige medium just refuses to move. ‘I am aiming this loudly at England.‘
