Word-Level vs Sentence-Level Suggestion

Pattern · cognition · personal_truth · visibility: publishable

Phone keyboard autocomplete (word-level suggestions) helps her; computer/tablet autocomplete (sentence-level completion) harms her. ‘On my phone there are suggestions on my keyboard, but on a computer and tablet, something is always trying to autocomplete my sentence and I find it very distracting.’ The granularity is everything: word-level prediction assists the thought; sentence-level completion hijacks it. The discovery followed from noticing she types fastest and most clearly with her thumbs — which is DATA, not preference. A cognitive accessibility pattern that most accessibility thinking has backwards.
