GIS is still coordinate-centric even though the interesting proximity relations (flight-proximity, cultural-proximity, horror-proximity, antipodal humor) are not geographic. The coordinate paradigm outlasted the constraint that made it sensible. QWERTY was designed around typewriter hammer mechanics; the prompt box was designed when computers needed human translators. In each case: the physical constraint dissolved; the interaction paradigm remained. O.coordinate-tyranny is the specific geographic case of O.paradigms-outlast-constraints: a design choice made when physical geography was the only thing being modeled, now applied to spaces (semantic, cultural, relational) where it excludes most of the interesting structure.
